| The Holt Collier Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #2018 meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM at the Clay County Economic Development Corporation on 510 E Broad Street in West Point Mississippi. All visitors are welcome. Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. Membership can be obtained through either direct or collateral family lines and kinship to a veteran must be documented genealogically. The minimum age for membership is12. |

To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those priciples which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. | Our camp, Holt Collier SCV Camp #2018, was chartered March 21, 2003. The camp was named after Holt Collier, a member of the 9th Texas Cavalry during the War Between the States. Just the name "Holt Collier" makes this camp unique. Holt Collier served as a member of the 9th Texas Cavalry, but the one thing that distinguishes Holt Collier was the fact he was a slave. Collier followed his master, Thomas Hinds, into the Civil War. At Green River Bridge in Tennessee, Holt Collier went from being camp servant to a soldier on the side of the Confederacy. Collier served in the Confederacy until the war ended in 1865. After the war, Collier returned to Greenville, Mississippi for a time. He went west to Texas only to later return home. Holt began providing wild game for meat to loggers, railroaders, and levee construction crews. Being an expert shot, he was able to support himself by the game he provided to these different workers in the area. His greatest claim to fame was the bear hunt he led President Theodore Roosevelt on in the Mississippi Delta. From that now famous hunt began the saga of the Teddy Bear. On February 28, 2004, Holt Collier was finally recognized with the placement of a Confederate headstone honoring Collier's service to the Confederacy. Many SCV Camps were represented at the dedication. Mr. Minor Buchanan, the author of the book on Holt Collier was also present to again relate the story of Holt Collier. Present for the dedication was the great-niece of Holt Collier, Ann Marie Parker; the great-great nephew, John Parker; and the great-great grandnephew, Brandon John Parker. |

Establishment of a War Between the States re-enactment in Clay County. 5. Donation of War Between the States era books to the Regional Bryan Public Library. |

| The Camp had a good time at the Prairie Arts Festival on September 3rd, 2005 in West Point Mississippi. We were able to inform the public about the Holt Collier Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #2018 located in West Point Mississippi. | On Saturday October 29th, members of the Holt Collier camp and of the William Barksdale Camp (Color Guard) participated in a memorial service honoring William A Whitaker who served in the 2nd Miss. State Cavalry in Company L. This ceremony took place at the Old Cumberland Cemetery in Cumberland Mississippi. Click here to see pictures of this ceremony. |
